The Bruce and Ruth Ryan Majerus Endowed Scholarship
Bruce and Ruth Majerus were passionate about education. Ruth was a teacher, and the couple believed education provided a path to a fulfilling life. To help provide this opportunity to others, they established the Bruce and Ruth Ryan Majerus Endowed Scholarship at the University of Saint Mary.
While neither Bruce nor Ruth were Saint Mary students, they developed an appreciation for the institution through Ruth’s sibling, Sister Macrina Ryan.
Sister Ryan entered the religious community of the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth in February 1950 and died in February 2005. She received a Bachelor’s in Business Administration from Saint Mary.
Bruce was an alumnus of Purdue University and a U.S. Army veteran, serving in the European Theater of Operations during World War II and, after the war ended, in the Occupation Army.
Ruth was a teacher and active volunteer at church, school, and the League of Women voters. Along with Bruce, she co-founded the Heralders Catholic singles group. She also traveled the world extensively in her later years, visiting five of the seven continents with her husband.
Bruce died in 2022, and Ruth passed away in 2023, at 101 years old. They were married for 65 years.
The University of Saint Mary thanks the Majerus family for their gift, which will provide educational opportunities to many Saint Mary students.
